In hot areas, people need more water

In difficult desert environment, like Al-Mahamra Al-Olia area in Beit Al-Faqih District, Al-Hodeida Governorate, IDPs and host community suffer greatly to obtain clean drinking water and provide the daily needs of water. There, people live in difficult conditions, with a lack of the very basics of life. It is rare to find a tree for shade, people then prefer to raise camels because they can bear the high temperature, and help them in their travels.

When NFDHR carried out an assessment of the humanitarian needs in Bait Al-Faqih, water was an urgent necessity in addition to education and shelter. The technical assessment aimed for 5 water projects, including Al-Mahamra water project, which will provide the needs of 2,582 beneficiaries of IDPs and the host community in 4 villages.

NFDHR installed a solar pumping system and a pumping room; with water transmission network with a length of 4,350 to 7 distribution points in the targeted villages.

The project was implemented with the full support of Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF). NFDHR helped form and train a community committee to manage, operate and maintain the project to ensure its sustainability.

The head of the project's community committee, Hussein Balghith, said, "In hot areas, people need a lot of water, especially in the summer. We used to get little water from distant villages, and the new project will provide water for everyone easily and at a lower cost."

In March 2023, before the advent of the month of Ramadan, Al-Mahamara Al-Olia water project was inaugurated and handed over to the Rural Water Authority, which in turn handed it over to the community committee and actually started operating the project. Water pumping continues through a fair distribution mechanism that ensures all villages and population centers in the region receive their water needs effortlessly and from a nearby place.
